At the playspace the other day, a kid bonked his head and ran straight to Mommy, wailing as she hugged and kissed and comforted him.
K does fine with just empathy. "Knee!" he'll yell. Or sometimes, "Thumb!" or "Bump head!" (A hurt arm or leg counts as "Knee!" Finger or hand injuries are "Thumb!" The rest of him is usually safe.) He'll keep yelling and will start crying if nobody acknowledges him, but if I just look over and say, "Oh, you shut your finger in the drawer!" he'll nod and say, "Thumb," again, and then he'll move on.
He is becoming more cranky as a toddler, but I'm glad he can handle the daily blows that life hands out.
