Chapter 4: It's a Jungle Gym, Not a Ladder
The organizing metaphor for this chapter is the career jungle gym. On a ladder, you go vertically up and you're looking at the butt of the person in front of you. On a jungle gym, everyone has a great view, and you're moving where you want to go instead of constantly trying to move in the same direction. The message is to be flexible and pursue great opportunities without worrying whether you are ascending the ladder.
Sandberg suggests setting two types of goals: one 18 months out, and one long-term. For the 18-month goal, set targets and personal stretch goals. For the long-term goal, seek diverse experiences, take risks, and go for it -- don't wait around for someone to reward you for your hard work.
